Tonle Sap Lake Description:

Highlight of Mekong Rive Cruise Tour in the Mekong River Delta Tonle Sap Lake is in Cambodia. This is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. In 1997 the lake was designated as a protected area under UNESCO's Man and Biosphere programme.
Tonle Sap Lake (also known as the Great Lake or simply Tonle Sap. It is situated in the center plains of the country, and has enormous significance for Cambodians. Tonle Sap Lake, along with the Tonle Sap River, forms a unique hydrological system, as well as an enormously diverse aquatic ecosystem. The lake also is an invaluable natural resource that provides sources of livelihood for the people living around it. Futher, Tonle Sap Lake acts as extremely important fish breeding ground and flood mediator for the Mekong River. Thus, the importance of the lake reaches far beyond Cambodia.
The lake is linked to the Mekong River by the Tonle Sap River. From November until June the lake flows into the Mekong. However, each year during the rainy season (mid June- late October) the Mekong River is inundated with rain waters. Its lower delta becomes flooded and cannot flow into the sea quickly enough to eliminate all the excess water. This causes the Mekong River to rise enough to reverse the flow of the Tonle Sap River causing it to flow back into the lake. The lake expands from 2,500 km2 to more than 16,000 km2 (160 Km long, 100 Km wide, 9m deep) creating an enormous wetland area. This wetland area supports a tremendous amount of biodiversity including plants, reptiles, mammals, birds and other animals. Many of these are known to be rare or endangered. These wetlands are also an important breeding area for fish from the lake and Mekong River.

RV Mekong Prestige II Reviews

  • 7 Nights on RV Mekong Prestige II

...We had a 7 day cruise in March 2014. From Siem Reap to Saigon on RV Mekong Prestige II. The boat was new this year. Very interesting excursions in the morning and afternoon along the Mighty Mekong River. The crew were delightful and went out of their way to ensure that we had a great time.

The food was good, and varied. - Bear in mind that the food is Asian, which we love - but others were less adaptable. The boat was not full, and there was lots of space both in the sun and in the shade. It is really great to relax after visit the Legend Angkor Wat Temples. I do not normally like the idea of cruises, but this was a great way to seen Cambodia and Vietnam Read More...

  • Thanks for the wonderful journey

I would like to reiterate what others have said of the Mekong Prestige II. It's more like a family than passengers and crew, that's how we were made to feel. The crew from Captain down to the laundry lady couldn't do enough for us. Every off shore excursion we were escorted not only by excellent tour guides but members of the crew to make sure we were looked after. We had so much fun on our journey from Vietnam to Cambodia. As for the food, and there was plenty of Vietnamese and Khmer food, I can hardly describe how fantastic that was in variety, and presentation, comparable to any first class restaurant. As a world traveller this was one of our best experiences Read More.

  • Explore Vietnam and Cambodia

...Mekong Prestige was fantastic. A relaxing way to see parts of Vietnam and Cambodia. The crew couldn't do enough for you to make sure you were comfortable. Our cabin had plenty of storage, including for cases. The food was varied and plentiful.... Breakfast was a buffet, but other meals were served by the delightful waiters. Coffee etc was available on the sun deck all day... Everyday there was a different cocktail before dinner. In Phnom Penh the local orphanage provide the evenings entertainment with singing and dancing, they were as good as the professional show we saw later in Siem Reap as they so obviously enjoyed showing us their skills. The crew, Vietnamese and Cambodian, presented a show on the last night. The Vietnamese and Cambodian guides were superb Read More...

  • A Big Thank for RV Mekong Prestige II

...completed an 8 day river cruise on board RV Mekong Prestige II from Ho Chi Min City (Vietnam) to Siem Reap (Cambodia), organised by Mekong Prestige II Online. It is easy to pay online, get confirmation, cabin number and embarkation contacts.
The boat was excellent - well maintained, clean with modest but adequate size cabins and large very well fitted en-suites. The crew members from Vietnam and Cambodia provided outstanding customer service which is sadly lacking in Australia. We learned a lot of history, cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia. The food was excellent - a range of Asian and western cuisine. This was a comfortable way to be exposed to this very interesting part of the world and we highly recommend RV Mekong Prestige II for my family Read More...
